Demons and Dudes Reception By Jarrod Pope

Hey guys!

Again, I'm very well aware of it being Cinco de Mayo AND Free Comic Book Day on May 5th. If you're not busy getting drunk and reading comics, come on down and show your buddy Jarrod some support for his first gallery show.

If not, I have a very good memory....

And for those not familiar with my work, it's a collection of my grotesque and homoerotic illustrations.

TERRORBLY ODD - A Screem-Print Weekend

A Disturbance of the Disturbance.

Well friends, the fear I had going into this show has come to fruition. Sadly, as of April 5th, Lucasfilm LTD. has asked that we shelve A Disturbance on the Fourth -- an announcement that really breaks my heart. Initially intended as a...
modest tribute to the famed saga, "Disturbance" eventually grew into a sort of tribute to my childhood. From days spent fabricating makeshift transport vehicles out of empty egg cartons, to countless sketches of Death Stars, Snowspeeders and Emperors meeting their doom. So, as you can imagine, there is an extra bit of sting that comes with having to cancel (or suspend indefinitely) this event. There seemed to be a good amount of energy growing with this show and I was very much looking forward to sharing those memories with all of you.

Now I know a lot of you are probably thinking that I'm agitated with the people at Lucasfilm and yeah, the initial response was a bit of "wtf?!", however, when you go into an event like this, you kinda know the risk -- they are only protecting their property in much the same way anyone else would. So yeah, it does suck, but I get it. What I do hope is that, somehow, this opens up a dialogue where I might obtain the proper permission to put on Disturbance somewhere down the road. Until then, though, we'll just have to wait and see.

So, now what? Well, seeing as the wonderful people at Pop Gallery have already made room for all of us on their calendar, we may as well put on a show, right? Damn right! So, after that bit of bad news, I'm extremely happy to announce what should be a really great event - TERRORBLY ODD! A Screem-Print Weekend. Centered around the classic monsters of early horror, TERRORBLY will be the most highly interactive show we've done to date. In addition to 6 new originals, we will be doing live screen printing… and this is where the fun part comes in. Jordan from The Fine Print Shoppe and I will be printing up custom, mix and match designs to your liking. In other words, you pick the shirt, you pick the background design and finally you pick from one of 6 classic monsters to finish up your custom shirt.

Now, I know this show may lack the sexiness of a Star Wars event, but I am confident that it will be a great time. After all of the headache and heartache, I have poured myself into these new pieces so I really do hope to see a lot of you out there. You all know I hate to ask any of you for anything, but this time… I humbly ask as many of you to make it out as possible. We are still organizing a meet-up after the event on Saturday night and with that said, hanging out with all you good people would be a great way to put all the disappointment this miserable fool had to go through to make this thing happen.

Again, as always, thank each and everyone of you for being each and every one of you.

Best,
-M
Regardless of the scheduling flub, I'm extremely excited about this event and cannot thank all at Pop Gallery enough for the opportunity (and idea) to put on a show that, for most of us, is a rhomp through a part of our childhood we never really let go of... at least until the prequels, that is.

The show itself will be made up of at least ten new works (I say "at least because" I would like to do more, but time is NOT on my side here. As it is, it's going to be a serious stretch to complete.) all themed around the characters that we've all come to know, love, and in some cases loathe.

Aside from the show, we are also going to be organizing a meet-up at the outdoor bar at Raglan Road. There's plenty of room for chatting and plenty of good brew on tap for drinking. So we hope to see as many of you out there as possible. Oh yeah, and although I'm not sure Disney would like costumes, feel free to wear your best Star Wars duds!

Also, please be sure to check in on this event page for updates, sketches and so on.

As always, thanks to all of you for all of this.

-M

A SKIP Solo Art Show - "FRANCHISE" @ Extra Large Gallery

On Thursday, May 3rd, Orlando B-Side Artist/Musician, SKIP, presents his second solo art show experience, ‘FRANCHISE,’ at Extra Large Gallery on Lake Eola (above Stardust Lounge).

This new collection of work presents a vivid blend between satirical social commentary and...
corporate pop art, and truly displays the progressive evolution of a new artist striving for the mastery of his own expression.

SKIP’s unique style of hyper-technical, obsessively executed, and meticulously flawless stencil art, created a great deal of buzz in the local art scene last November with his debut solo show, ‘OCD: An Expression in Obsession’ located at Redefine Arts inside City Arts Factory.

Since then, he has utilized that time to further develop his own artistic voice, employing new and ground-breaking techniques to compliment his already revolutionary approach to artistic staples such as stenciling and typography.

Watch out for this up-and-coming local artist, as his unique talent, potential and process promises to further establish him and his work in the world of art for years to come.

I started creating art because it was in my blood. It was passed down from one generation to the next. I started seeing the world differently as a kid and it lead me down the pathway to complete freedom. I was doing something that I loved, creating something from nothing. I did not have one style or direction, nor do I now. This journey is about connecting to nature and finding myself along the way. Please join me, Friday the 13th at NV Lounge.

DLXS presents THE AMES BROS.(Past Show)

DLXS presents THE AMES BROS.! We are very excited to have Barry Ament and Cody Shultz present a lecture of their amazing work, insight and inspiration with our students and faculty!

" Spawned from the high mountain crags and barren dust bowls of Montana, the Ames Bros ...(Coby Schultz and Barry Ament) are a two man wrecking crew. Upon their mighty shoulders they carry with them scores of famous rock bands, hundreds of screen printed rock posters, snowboard companies, super bowl logos, and Rambo-esque survival tactics.

Since the day they opened their studio in 1994, the Ames Bros took off and never touched back down. Out of the gates their talents were recognized by rock greats Pearl Jam, a client they've shared many successes with, including Grammy nominations for their clever and artful packaging for Vitalogy and Yield. In the music industry, it’s common knowledge that Ames Bros helped turn the lifeless cd package into the unique collectible that it’s predecessor, the record jacket, was. Their most notable contribution to the Rock world however, is via their screen printed Rock posters (check out their 10 page spread in the new “Art of Modern Rock”). They’ve designed hundreds’s of original screen printed posters, as well as CD packaging, and, of course, T-shirts for the likes of Neil Young, Radiohead, Coldplay, Sting, Phish, John Mayer, Snoop Dog, Foo Fighters, The Strokes, The Hives, along with dozens of Indie Rock bands. Hell, Frank Kozik, the most renowned poster artist has dubbed the Ames Bros as “the best poster artists in the business.”

Most notably during this time, Ames Bros became the go to guys for MTV, having a hand in most of their promotions, on and off the air. Add to this their long history partnering with snowboard companies like K2 and Ride Snowboards, Ames Bros emerged as a proven force to be reckoned with. It wasn't long before the general public and the advertising world caught wind of the duo and their work starting popping up everywhere. Soon they were sought out to execute ad campaigns for the likes of MTV, Nike, the NBA, NFL, AOL, Nissan, Honda, Absolut, Nascar, EA sports, Powerbar, Sony, Sprint, and Got Milk?. Recently, Sir Richard Branson gave them the keys to his new company Virgin Mobile, putting them in charge of branding and positioning the company to it’s core audience through fully designing and producing the magazine “USER” and accompanying websites. A true testament to their wit and skill, it’s been a success and on it’s way to a 4th issue.

On an international scale, they landed a spot in the prestigious Taschen book, “Graphic Design for the 21st Century, 100 of the World’s Best Designers” and have been featured in dozens of other books, magazines, and even college textbooks. Demand for their insight and talent has added to their notoriety by bringing them around the world to various universities and colleges as guest lecturers, but has never caused them to stray from their roots and goals to remain true to the hand crafted quality that got them there."

"Biography" Parker Sketch Solo Art Show(Past Show)

"Biography" Parker Sketch solo art show.
April 2nd through 30th
at Gallery Q at The Center
946 N Mills, Orlando FL 32803
This is a FREE event
...

Parker Sketch is well known for his pop art. An active member of the Orlando local art scene, he regularly shows throughout the Central Florida area. His recent solo shows in Orlando have featured video games, cartoon characters, street signs, music icons, and wine glasses. His work can be described as a combination between Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollock, combining pop culture icons with drips and splashed paint. Parker's work is usually composed of bright vibrant brush strokes and splashes of paint.

With "Biography", Parker Sketch is showing a personal side. Parker explains the change of pace; "although I see a lot of personal content in my work, people often tell me that they don't see a lot of 'Parker' in my work." "Biography" is a show that is a very personal view into Parker's life, an autobiography using paint. This collection of work tells the story of Parker's experiences growing up in the projects of Chicago, a product of a dysfunctional family, and surrounded by poverty. He also explores his early exposure to alcohol, living on the streets, and discovering his sexual identity. Maintaining some of his pop culture references, this body of work features a broader yet more personal symbolism. The show features several self portraits, including some rarely seen work from Parker's college years at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Parker Sketch was born and raised in Chicago. He earned his BFA at the School of the Art institute of Chicago, majoring in painting and art history. In Chicago, he always had creative jobs at design companies, frame shops, and galleries. He moved to Orlando in 1999, seeking a change in pace and a more comfortable climate. Parker quickly discovered a vibrant art scene and has actively participated in it since. He shows throughout the Central Florida area, and has had 9 solo and 3 two artist shows in the past 3 years. Parker recently had his first Museum show "Brain On Art" at The Lake Eustis Museum of Art in December 2011. In addition to his own shows Parker has curated 2 major art shows in 2011. A leader in the Orlando art scene, he has created a monthly critique group, co-hosts a weekly live painting artists' networking event at OLV, and helped coordinate the "Art House" at Orlando Calling.

"Biography" will be on display at Gallery Q, at The Center, Orlando's GLBT Community Center on Mills near Downtown Orlando. Twenty percent of all sales will be donated to The Center.
